Cold weather safety & shelter resources

January 30, 2026 | Blog

Floridians don’t often have to think about freezing temperatures, but this weekend many communities across our state will experience an unseasonable cold snap.

Across the Treasure Coast and Palm Beaches, counties have activated their cold-weather shelters as temperatures could dip below 40 degrees overnight. These warming centers are open to help vulnerable residents stay warm, healthy, and out of dangerous conditions.

Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Emergency Cold-Weather Shelters Are Open

    1. County officials have opened cold-weather and warming shelters in multiple locations.

      1. Find your county’s shelter information here:

        1. Palm Beach County

        2. Martin County

        3. St. Lucie County

  2. Transportation Support Is Available

    1. Free public transportation through Area Regional Transit (ART) is offering rides to the shelter from multiple pickup points throughout Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce, making it easier for anyone who needs help getting to a warm location.

  3.  Look Out for Vulnerable People & Pets

    1. Bring pets inside, check on older neighbors, and make sure those without reliable heat have a safe place to stay.

If you or someone you know needs a safe, warm place tonight, please take advantage of these resources. Stay safe, stay warm, and take care of one another.
