There is a massive human and environmental toll from the discharges to the Treasure Coast: businesses are forced to shut down, people are getting sick, animals are dying and our critical habitats are being destroyed.
Yet tragically, the system is working exactly as it was designed. For decades, special interests have been prioritized over human health and safety. And it’s turning the Treasure Coast into the Tortured Coast.
There’s a real disconnect between the people in Tallahassee, the people in Washington, D.C. and the people who are forced to live with the damaging consequences of Lake Okeechobee discharges. To fix the problem, we must force the people in power to see the consequences of their actions. The Tortured Coast documentary series highlights the personal toll of this crisis: the people and places being destroyed.
