Remembering our fallen heroes
Five years ago, the world watched in horror as Afghanistan descended further into chaos. But one day remains especially painful to remember: August 26, 2021, when a bombing at Abbey Gate at Hamid Karzai International Airport took the lives of 13 American heroes.
These 13 men and women embodied the very best of our nation. They answered the call to serve, knowing the risks, and willingly put themselves in harm’s way to protect vulnerable people, defend our country, and stand for freedom and democracy. They served with courage, selflessness, and honor. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and our nation will forever owe them a debt of gratitude.
Today and everyday, our hearts are with the Gold Star families of these fallen heroes. May they take some small ounce of comfort in knowing that we will never forget their names or their sacrifices.
