It’s Small Business Week!
This week, we celebrate National Small Business Week, and it’s a chance to recognize the backbone of our economy: America’s small business owners. These hardworking men and women embody the grit, dedication, and innovation that defines our nation.
Today, I’m especially proud to highlight two remarkable individuals in our community: Master Chief Walter Evans (US Navy, Ret.) and Chief Rita Evans (US Navy, Ret.). They served our country with distinction for decades, and they continue that spirit of service through their business in the Port St. Lucie community.
After retiring from the Navy, Walter and Rita became franchise owners of Kona Ice, bringing joy (and cool relief) to families, schools, and neighborhoods across our district. For them, business ownership is an extension of their service. As Rita says, “in the military, you are groomed to serve your country. Kona Ice allows us to continue to serve but in our community.”
Walter’s Navy career spanned almost 30 years, from deployments in the Pacific to mentoring the next generation of service members as a Naval recruiter. He lives by this simple, yet powerful, motto: “One day at a time.”
Rita’s story is just as inspiring, marked by her rise through the Navy ranks, leadership as a Naval Counselor, and her commitment to education. The Evans family served with honor, perseverance, and commitment.
Together with the Trump Administration, Republicans in Congress are working hard to support Main Street job creators, like the Evans family. The Small Business Administration (SBA) has introduced the “Made in America Manufacturing Initiative” to bolster small businesses through increased access to capital, reduced regulatory burdens, and support for domestic manufacturing and exports. In Congress, we’re working to extend President Trump’s tax cuts and deliver real relief for families and entrepreneurs across the country. It’s all about creating more high-paying jobs, revitalizing our neighborhoods, and ensuring that small businesses remain a pillar of our American economy.
This National Small Business Week, let’s commit to supporting our community’s businesses and the dedicated individuals that drive them.
