We’ve had some big wins on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee this year, focusing on balancing transportation needs with community priorities — ensuring clean neighborhoods, accessible waterways, and reliable infrastructure that keeps our region moving forward.

One of the most important developments we had this year was the St. Lucie Railroad Bridge schedule. In 2021, Brightline announced plans to significantly increase passenger rail traffic across the single-track drawbridge over the St. Lucie River, raising concerns about maintaining access for recreational and commercial boaters. After years of asking, the U.S. Coast Guard finally issued an operating schedule that guarantees boaters predictable access to the waterway at least 50 percent of the time.

Another ongoing issue is rail operations in Fort Pierce, where residents have raised concerns about debris and waste along the tracks. While we have seen some improvement there is still more work to be done.
