To put it simply, if I wouldn’t put it in the bathtub with my kids, I don’t want it in our waterways. So whether it's runoff from agriculture, pollution from septic tanks, herbicides like glyphosate, radioactive waste from phosphate mining or any other kind of dangerous water pollution, we need to find a way to stop it at the source.

That’s why I helped introduce the bipartisan Local Water Protection Act, and I’m glad to report this bill passed out of our committee this week.

This bill will increase support and funding to prevent nonpoint source pollution. This is so important because funding for this program can be used to stop pollution at the source by:

  • Creating wetland basins
  • Dredging out legacy pollutants
  • Converting septic tanks to sewer systems
  • Installing new water pump stations
  • Implementing real best management practices
  • Restoring already impaired waterways
  • Mitigating the impacts of the effects of canalization of a waterway like the Kissimmee
  • And so much more!

Now, I’ll keep fighting to get this bill a vote on the House floor so we can continue making real progress for our waterways and communities!
