As you know, Washington can often be a frustrating place of partisan gridlock and disappointing news. But this week, I have some really great news on a couple of different fronts to share with you!

First, the House of Representatives passed a huge water bill called the Water Resources Development Act of 2020, which included a number of provisions I fought hard to include. These provisions would take critical steps to expedite construction of the EAA Reservoir, reduce discharges from Lake Okeechobee and combat harmful algal blooms!

These are just a few of the nearly dozen provisions we successfully passed as part of this bill, but you can learn about all of them in the video below and on my website at mast.house.gov/WRDA.

Another piece of great news to come out of this week has to do with Port St. Lucie veteran and rape survivor Harmony Allen. For years, I have been working with Harmony to hold her convicted rapist accountable after he was set free on a misconstrued legal technicality.

It has been a difficult fight - writing Harmony’s Law to fix this loophole, urging the Solicitor General to bring her case to the Supreme Court and writing an amicus brief in support of Harmony - but it was worth it.

This week the United States Supreme Court ruled unanimously in Harmony’s favor, delivering justice to Harmony and her family after decades of fighting! This monumental decision means that Harmony’s rapist will be sent back to prison and hundreds of convicted rapists will be kept behind bars.

Check out this video to learn more about Harmony and this huge victory for justice:

This week was full of big wins for our community, and I couldn’t be more proud of what we have accomplished together!

In case you missed it, here are a few other things that happened this week:

  • The House of Representatives passed my legislation to rename the Post Office in Port Salerno in honor of fallen Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Joseph Bullock.
  • I reflected on the 79th Anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor live from the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
  • I opposed legislation that would make it harder to bring troops home from overseas and also voted against a “Continuing Resolution” that further delays an increase in funding for Everglades restoration projects.
