ICYMI: Honoring our fallen heroes
It’s an understatement to say that every military funeral stays with you. There is no way to repay the debt we owe to those killed in action, but I recently wrote an op-ed in Fox News about how we can do more to show our gratitude as a country.
The Final Honors Act would allow any U.S. service member killed in action to lie in state beneath the dome of the Capitol. While this honor has existed for more than a century and a half, only 46 individuals have ever received it. Our fallen warriors—who knowingly stepped into danger to protect all of us—deserve that same level of respect.
Families have the choice to accept this honor, and I believe the first offer should go to the family of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, who recently lost her life in service.
I hope to see my colleagues stand beside me in giving this honor to those who sacrifice their lives for our freedoms.
