Following my 12-year career in the Army, I was fortunate to be able to use the G.I. Bill to go back to school, finish my education and get back to work. Ensuring that every one of my brothers and sisters in arms has access to these resources and benefits after their service is incredibly important to me.

That’s why I’m excited to share that this week the House passed the Protect the G.I. Bill Act to make it easier for veterans to transition into civilian life and achieve their educational goals. This was just 1 of 16 different pieces of legislation the House passed this week to help veterans and their families, including:

• The Deborah Sampson Act to expand medical services for female veterans who primarily receive their care from VA medical centers.
• The Veteran Entrepreneur Training Act, which authorizes the Small Business Administration’s Boots To Business training program for five years.

The bottom line is that when somebody decides to put on the uniform and serve their country, they are making a decision to put life as they know it on hold and sacrifice for our nation. We may never be able to fully repay them for their service, but that will never stop me from trying.

• I asked the Coast Guard what changes we can make to prevent boating tragedies from happening on our waterways.
• I joined the T&I Subcommittee on Aviation to discuss ways we can make air travel more accommodating to people with prosthetics or in wheelchairs.
• I caught up with some of the EOD technicians who put their lives on the line every day to keep their fellow soldiers and our country safe.
