The opioid crisis claimed the lives of 47,000 Americans in 2017 alone. In that same year, nearly 1.7 million Americans suffered from some form of addiction related to prescription opioids.

Unless we act, this problem is only going to get worse. That’s why the House recently passed the bipartisan Expanding Findings for Federal Opioid Research and Treatment (EFFORT) Act, which directs the National Science Foundation to support research on opioid addiction.

This will help us better understand, treat and prevent opioid addiction. Ultimately, it will help us save lives.
