There is no doubt in my mind that it is in the national interest of the United States to combat anti-Semitism at home and abroad. Anti-Semitism challenges the basic principles of tolerance, dignity and respect. The very foundations of democracy - values that Israel and the United States share - are threatened by rampant anti-Semitism around the world.

This week the House acted to address these threats by passing a bill that I co-sponsored called the Combating European Anti-Semitism Act. The bill increases monitoring of anti-Jewish incidents and the steps taken to combat them. The legislation also encourages our government to partner with European law enforcement agencies to share information and best practices to combat anti-Semitic threats.

There is an urgent need to ensure the safety and security of Jewish communities both in the United States and throughout the rest of the world. We must take further steps to protect synagogues, schools, community centers and other institutions. Rest assured, I will continue pushing this bill until it is signed into law, and will continue working to ensure safety for our Jewish community.
