As of 12:01 Wednesday morning, the federal government shut down due to a lapse in appropriations, or funding. While Republicans in the House and Senate voted against a shutdown, Democrats have refused to work with us on a short-term solution, resulting in impacts on government services and hundreds of thousands of employees being furloughed.

I want to be clear—my team and I will still be working to serve you for the duration of this shutdown. Casework in our office is a top priority, and we will do everything in our power to help. While some things may be delayed, once the government is back up and running, we will revisit any cases we couldn’t address earlier. Please continue to reach out with any issues you are facing.

During the shutdown, many federal agencies will be closed except for “essential” activity. Each agency issues different guidelines, but critical services like Medicare, veterans’ programs, and disaster relief remain operational—though some delays are possible due to staffing changes.

Here are some examples of government services that will continue during this shutdown:

  • Social Security payments will still be processed and you can still make Medicare claims.

  • VA Medical Centers remain open and veterans’ benefits such as compensation, pensions, education, and housing assistance continue.

  • Burials at VA national cemeteries proceed.

  • FEMA will respond to natural disasters though it cannot issue or renew flood insurance policies.

  • The U.S. Postal Service will not be interrupted.

However, this shutdown will have major impacts for the American people.

  • Air traffic controllers, members of all military branches, and federal law enforcement officers are reporting to work without pay.

  • TSA agents are unpaid but will remain on the job, and staffing shortages could cause delays at airports nationwide.

  • Weather forecasting could face delays as hurricane season begins.

  • National parks will be closed for tours and other visitor services.

  • SNAP and WIC will not be able to process new applications and recipients may experience delays in their benefits.

Additionally, if you are a federal employee – including military personnel – you could see an interruption in your pay schedule. If you normally receive pay on the 15th day of the month, and this shutdown extends beyond the 16th, your paycheck will be delayed.

For questions about a specific agency, you can visit its website or call my office.

Please know, I do not like sending this message. A government shutdown risks our national security and disrupts the lives of many Americans. It is not something I ever want to see happen.  I will continue to fight for you in Washington. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to my office.
