We are witnessing a historic moment.  Brave Cubans have taken to the streets to voice their dissatisfaction with their oppressive communist government.  It’s a powerful message that not only the current regime needs to hear, but the entire world as well:

Communism does not work.

We’ve heard this story before: faced with a disastrous economic downturn, rising prices and limited supplies because of a greedy government, a few brave and independent-minded individuals speak out, but are quickly silenced, instilling fear in the rest of the community.

But this time, the Cuban people have flipped the script.  They are not afraid, they know that they deserve better than communism, and they are demanding to be heard.  There are even reports of protestors flying the American flag throughout the country because they know that our flag stands for freedom.

The United States has long been a light for the oppressed.  It is the greatest force for human dignity in the world, and it is our responsibility to help spread the values of freedom, democracy, and individual liberty, particularly in those places where human rights are undermined.

I’ll continue to monitor the situation in Cuba and support their fight for liberty!
