Freedom of speech is the bedrock of every democracy. For decades, our Republic has sought friendship and alliances with other nations that shared that value.
Under President Donald Trump, Brazil was one of those nations. Under Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, it’s slowly moving out of our orbit and Americans and American companies are paying the price.
In a move straight out of the authoritarian playbook, Brazil moved last month to shutdown X, the social media platform known as Twitter. Brazil’s left-wing government did this because they couldn’t handle X’s anti-censorship stance, especially as corruption was being called out left and right.
Brazil didn't just stop at shutting down the last truly free social media platform, they also brazenly seized millions from X to pay BS “fines.”
The ban has cut off more than 200 million residents of Brazil from the last, truly free social media platforms on Earth. It's also negatively impacting millions of American citizens of Brazilian descent, including many Floridians, who use X to communicate with family and friends in Brazil.
Despite this reality, we’ve not seen any action from Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. The Biden-Hariss administration has been quick to call out other bad actors that trample on their people’s rights, but when it comes to Brazil, Joe and Kamala are radio silent.
That’s why I fired off a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken. My questions are locked and loaded: Will the U.S. keep backing ‘democratic’ nations that flirt with authoritarianism, or will we stand our ground?
