China Social Media Reciprocity Act
Everyday, Chinese officials lie through our social media, hoping to accomplish two things: to sow division in America and to sing the praises of a brutal dictator in Beijing and communist ideology.
However, rather than stopping these blatant lies from the Chinese Communist Party, American social media platforms instead banned and flagged numerous conservative users from freely expressing their opinions. Thanks to the Twitter Files, we learned the extent the platforms have gone to silence conservative users, while Chinese government officials were able to freely spread their propaganda.
Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of democracy. If the Chinese government insists on banning freedom on their own soil, then they should not be able to use American platforms to mislead Americans on American soil. On top of that, it does not make any sense why officials from a regime that suppresses its dissidents are posting freely while patriotic Americans who happen to have conservative political preferences get banned.
That’s why, this week, I introduced the China Social Media Reciprocity Act, which would provide authority for the White House to ban sanctioned officials and entities of communist China from American social media platforms as long as they continue to censor Americans on Chinese social media.
Xi Jinping is clear on what he wants: he wants China to topple America and put communism on top. If President Biden won’t do anything, it’s the role of Congress to stop them. I will continue to work with the House Republicans to hold China accountable.
